This is the switch under the hood that compresses when the hood is closed and puts the factory alarm system into armed mode, assuming the locks are locked. These usually have ripped rubber boots on them from when your friend, who doesn't know anything about engines, leaned in to try and "diagnose" something and put his hand down on it to hold him up.
The switch is mounted to the shock tower in the engine bay. The alarm system uses this switch to determine if the hood is open. If your alarm light is staying on and killing your battery, but your interior lights aren't staying on, this switch is a common culprit.
